The name "Balboa Jolly" might have thrown you for a loop. Just what the heck is a Balboa Jolly??? Well... it might have started out as a Fiat 500, 600, Jardiniere, or even a Renault, but when it hits the shores of Balboa Island in California (http://www.balboa-island.com/) a rare car becomes something even more special.

Maybe it's the laid back atmosphere of island life, or maybe it's the fact that many of the "Balboa Fleet" are painted in more than one color, chosen by their owners to reflect their tastes rather than giving in to convention and restoring them to the exact factory color.

Not that many of these restorations are anything less than spectacular, but they seemingly have now become an extension of their owner's personality:

(Yes, that IS a Renault Jolly with flames!!!)
Whatever the reason, it is obvious that the Balboa Jollys, as well as their owners, are a fun loving bunch. And nowhere is that more evident than at the annual Balboa Island Parade that this year due largely to the efforts of the World's Best Jolly Wrangler, Scott Sarkisian, featured no fewer than 17 Jollys!

This once a year "Jolly-palooza" held in June of each year is partly a celebration of cool beach cars that looks like a cross between the Fourth of July and the parking lot at a Jimmy Buffett concert!

(Maybe I should have said a Greatful Dead concert...)
In any case, it is obvious to see that this is a special group of people with a stunning bunch of cars, doing with them what they were intended; having fun by the water!

Many thanks to Scott Sarkisian for his colorful photos of this year's parade entries!

And thanks most of all to the owners of the Jollys in this year's parade, not only for saving these unbelievably beautiful examples of hand crafted beach cars, but for putting forth the effort to get them out and share them with the rest of us!
